North Carolina GOP enters redistricting battle as leaders plan vote next week to redraw House map

North Carolina already redrew its map in 2023, which gave the GOP 10 seats out of 14 in the House last year. The newer map though could target North Carolina Democratic Rep. Don Davis' seat, which is the only seat in a swing district.

North Carolina Republican legislative leaders on Monday announced plans to vote on redrawing the state’s U.S. House district map next week, which would likely give Republicans another seat in the 2026 midterms.

Redistricting feuds have dominated state politics ahead of the midterms after Texas debated its map, which it adopted in August and potentially gives Republicans five more seats in Congress. California then advanced an effort to redo its map to offset the Republican gains in Texas.

Republican leaders in North Carolina said in a news release that their plan “follows President Donald Trump’s call urging legislatures across the country to take action to nullify Democrat redistricting efforts," per the Associated Press.

It was not immediately clear what day the vote would take place.

North Carolina already redrew its map in 2023, which gave the GOP 10 seats out of 14 in the House last year. The newer map, though, could target North Carolina Democratic Rep. Don Davis' seat, which is the only seat in a swing district.

The moves come after the Utah state legislature approved its newest map last week after a judge ordered the map to be redrawn because state lawmakers ignored safeguards voters put in place to ensure districts aren’t gerrymandered.

Missouri also passed its own redistricting map last month, which potentially creates another Republican seat in the House.
