Texas Republicans on Wednesday released a congressional map proposal that would create five new House seats in areas that President Trump won by double digits last year.

Earlier this month, Trump said that he hopes redistricting would give the GOP a few more House seats, helping them hold onto the slim majority in the November 2026 midterm elections. The state usually redraws its congressional maps every 10 years in accordance with the census.

There are currently 219 Republicans in the House and 212 Democrats, with four vacancies, one of which was last held by a Texas Democrat.

Texas State Rep. Todd Hunter (R) filed the proposal as legislators met for a special session, The Hill news outlet reported.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries will meet with Texas Democrats on Wednesday over the redistricting fight.
