Trump pulls US out of UNESCO again, after Biden rejoined
"Like many UN organizations, UNESCO strayed from its founding mission," State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said
President Trump is pulling the U.S. out of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization again on Tuesday, after former President Biden had rejoined the organization.
Trump had the U.S. leave UNESCO during his first term in 2019, and Biden had the U.S. reenter it during his term in office in 2023, The Hill news outlet reported.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce posted on X on Tuesday, "Today, the United States announced our decision to withdraw from UNESCO. Like many UN organizations, UNESCO strayed from its founding mission. Going forward, U.S. participation in international organizations must make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous."
In February, Trump signed an executive order that directed the U.S. to review its participation in UNESCO, while also withdrawing from both the United Nations Human Rights Council and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly posted on X on Tuesday, "President Trump has decided to withdraw from UNESCO – which supports woke, divisive cultural and social causes. The President will always put America First. Our membership in all international organizations must align with our national interests."
