George Bush to attend Obama presidential center opening alongside Biden, Clinton: Report
The center – encompassing a museum, an athletic center, cafe and restaurant, a branch of the Chicago Public Library and more – will officially open to the public on Friday, but will have its ceremonial opening Thursday
Former Republican President George W. Bush will reportedly attend the grand opening of former President Barack Obama's presidential center on Thursday, alongside former Presidents Bill Clinton and Joe Biden.
The center – encompassing a museum, an athletic center, cafe and restaurant, a branch of the Chicago Public Library and more – will officially open to the public on Friday, but will have its ceremonial opening Thursday. It is located in the historic Jackson Park on the South Side of Chicago near the University of Chicago's campus.
The center has not confirmed the presidential guest list but a source familiar with the planning confirmed the guests to the Chicago Sun Times on Wednesday. The former presidents' wives will also be in attendance.
Obama and his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, are expected to deliver remarks.
Other guests at the event include Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Vedder, the Roots, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Marc Anthony, U2’s Bono and actress and producer Marsai Martin.
The formal opening comes after years of legal battles and backlash from the public over ballooning costs. The Obama Foundation expected the project to cost $500 million when it broke ground in September 2021. However, the project will end up costing roughly $350 million more with an estimated total price of $850 million.
President Donald Trump is not scheduled to attend the grand opening.
