Netanyahu gives Trump letter nominating him for Nobel Prize over Israel-Iran ceasefire
“The president has already realized a great opportunity. He forged the Abraham Accords. He’s forging peace as we speak in one country and one region after the other,” Netanyahu said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday night presented President Donald Trump with a letter that formally nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in facilitating a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
Netanyahu presented the letter during a dinner at the White House, which comes weeks after Israeli and U.S. forces bombed Iranian nuclear facilities in order to destroy its nuclear program. Iran retaliated against both countries, but Israel and Iran have since agreed to the ceasefire.
“The president has already realized a great opportunity. He forged the Abraham Accords. He’s forging peace as we speak in one country and one region after the other,” Netanyahu said. “So, I want to present to you, Mr. President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize committee. It’s nominating you for the peace prize, which is well deserved.”
Trump appeared surprised by the nomination, stating that he "didn't know" the U.S. ally was planning to nominate him.
“Wow. Thank you very much," Trump said. "Coming from you in particular, this is very meaningful.”
The nomination comes after Pakistan and Georgia GOP Rep. Buddy Carter also nominated Trump for the award. Pakistan nominated the president for his role in de-escalating a brief conflict between India and Pakistan earlier this year.
Carter also nominated Trump for his role in facilitating the ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
