President Trump announces new tariffs on auto imports

The president said he expects all car companies to expand operations in the U.S. or relocate their businesses to the U.S. if they are not already in the country.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced new 25% tariffs on all auto imports coming into the United States.

The president said he expects all car companies to expand operations in the U.S. or relocate their businesses to the U.S. if they are not already in the country.

This will continue to spur growth like you haven't seen before," Trump said. "We'll effectively be charging a 25% tariff. But if you build your car in the United States, there is no tariff."

The new announcement comes ahead of next week's "liberation day," where the president is expected to impose his large scale tariffs on U.S. allies and trading partners, including Canada and Mexico. Those tariffs are expected to go into effect on April 2.
