President Trump extends federal hiring freeze for another 90 days
The extension will not impact military, national security, or immigration positions, or affect Social Security and Medicare benefits.
President Donald Trump on Thursday signed a memorandum that extended the federal hiring freeze for new government employees for another 90 days, which will now expire in mid-July.
The extension comes as the Trump administration moves to restructure the federal government by drastically reducing the size and scope of its workforce, and slashing wasteful government spending.
The president said the latest extension will apply to "all executive departments and agencies regardless of their sources of operational and programmatic funding," but will not impact the Director of the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) deadline to submit his plan to reduce the federal workforce.
"This memorandum does not apply to military personnel of the Armed Forces or to positions related to immigration enforcement, national security, or public safety," Trump said. "Moreover, nothing in this memorandum shall adversely impact the provision of Social Security, Medicare, or veterans' benefits."
The president added that the new order, which will expire on July 15, means all vacant civilian positions will not be filled, and no new positions will be created.
