Trump announces Azerbaijan, Armenian leaders will meet at White House for peace summit
The two countries have been engaged in conflict since the 1980s, but tensions most recently flared in 2023 when Azerbaijan invaded and took over the Armenian enclave Nagorno-Karabakh.
President Donald Trump on Thursday announced the leaders of the Caucasus countries Azerbaijan and Armenia will meet at the White House on Friday for a "historic peace summit," that will include a peace signing ceremony.
The two countries have been engaged in conflict since the 1980s, but tensions most recently flared in 2023 when Azerbaijan invaded and took over the Armenian enclave Nagorno-Karabakh.
The two countries announced in March that they were prepared to end the decades-long war and the peace deal was reached after Trump special envoy Steve Witkoff visited Azerbaijan earlier this year.
"I look forward to hosting the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan at the White House tomorrow for a Historic Peace Summit," Trump posted to Truth Social. "These two Nations have been at War for many years, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people.
"Many leaders have tried to end the War, with no success, until now, thanks to 'TRUMP,'" he continued. "My Administration has been engaged with both sides for quite some time."
Trump said the festivities would include a peace signing ceremony in the afternoon, and the U.S. will also sign economic agreements with both countries to "fully unlock the potential of the South Caucasus region."
"I am very proud of these courageous Leaders for doing the right thing for the Great People of Armenia and Azerbaijan," he concluded. "It will be a Historic Day for Armenia, Azerbaijan, the United States, and, THE WORLD. See you then."
The peace deal will include the creation of a passage through one of Armenia's territories that will be named the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity," which will link Azerbaijan to a small enclave near Turkey, Axios reported.
