Trump blasts NJ Democrat Mikie Sherrill as 'fake and corrupt' with 'unusual name'
"Mikie Sherrill looks [like] such an innocent name," Trump said. "But her energy policies would send your prices soaring and make New Jersey even more expensive than it already is.”
President Donald Trump on Friday night urged New Jersey voters to vote for Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli, blasting his opponent Mikie Sherrill as "fake and corrupt" with "an unusual name."
Trump stumped for Ciattarelli during a telerally, where he emphasized Ciattarelli's approach to energy. The rally took place just hours before the president was set to depart for Asia.
“[Ciattarelli’s] running against a fake and corrupt radical left Democrat opponent who had lots of problems in school, lots of problems with honesty for a long time,” Trump said in his 13-minute speech. “Mikie, as they call her — the only thing she’s got is an unusual name, other than that she’s terrible ... Mikie Sherrill looks [like] such an innocent name, but her energy policies would send your prices soaring and make New Jersey even more expensive than it already is.”
Trump said he would campaign for Ciattarelli more when he returns from Asia and in the final weeks leading up to next month's general election. Axios reported that he is expected to hold more telerallies.
Sherrill claimed that if Ciattarelli wins the election then he would be the "Trump of Trenton" and that he has been operating as Trump's lackey.
“It’s no surprise Jack is campaigning with Trump in this final stretch, given he is running to be his lackey in New Jersey. Jack has cheered Trump on as he rips away healthcare from hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans and drives up costs while pocketing billions with his tariff regime,” Sherrill told Politico. “When Jack got Trump on the phone tonight, he couldn’t even bring himself to say a word about New Jersey commuters and Trump’s attack on the Gateway Tunnel Project. It’s pathetic.”
The two candidates are running to replace outgoing Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy. The general election will take place on Nov. 4.
