Trump details plans to make IVF more affordable through insurance guidance
The announcement fulfills a campaign promise Trump made last year, where he promised his administration would provide government subsidies or mandate private health insurance coverage of IVF if elected.
President Donald Trump on Thursday announced at the White House that he will be issuing two orders that are aimed at expanding access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, including by lowering the cost of a common fertility drug.
The announcement fulfills a campaign promise Trump made last year, in which he promised his administration would provide government subsidies or mandate private health insurance coverage for IVF, if elected.
Trump said he will issue new guidance that will allow employers to offer IVF coverage as a benefit of company insurance plans.
"We're here today to announce a historic victory for American women, mothers, and families," Trump said. "With the actions I will outline this afternoon, we'll dramatically slash the cost of IVF and many of the most common fertility drugs ... In the Trump administration, we want to make it easier for couples to have babies, raise children and start the families they always dreamed about."
Trump said he also made a deal with EMD Serono to offer its fertility drugs as part of a “Most Favored Nation” plan that would limit medications from being sold to Americans for more than the highest price overseas.
The news builds on Trump's executive order in February that directed federal agencies to find ways to lower costs of IVF.
