Trump jokes 2024 turkey pardons were 'invalid' because Biden used autopen to sign them

Trump said he saved the two turkeys from being executed this year, despite the pardon being invalid, and also pardoned "Gobble" and "Waddle," who are the two largest turkeys to be pardoned on record.

President Donald Trump joked Tuesday that former President Joe Biden's turkey pardons last year were "invalid" because he used an autopen to sign the paper, but assured the public that he has since pardoned them himself.

Biden pardoned the turkeys "Peach" and "Blossom" ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday last year, continuing a presidential tradition that dates back to the late 1980s. The names of the two turkeys were an homage to the state flower of Biden's home state of Delaware, the peach blossom.

Trump said he saved the two turkeys from being executed this year, despite the pardon being invalid, and also pardoned "Gobble" and "Waddle," who are the two largest turkeys to be pardoned on record.

"I wanted to make an important announcement," Trump said at the White House. "Because you remember last year, after a thorough and very rigorous investigation by [Attorney General] Pam Bondi and all of the people at Department of Justice, the FBI, the CIA, and the White House Counsel's Office … I have determined that last year's turkey pardons are totally invalid. Null and void.

"The turkeys known as Peach and Blossom last year have been located, and they were on their way to be processed, in other words, to be killed," he continued. "But I've stopped that journey, and I am officially pardoning them. And they will not be served for Thanksgiving dinner. We saved them in the nick of time."

The joke comes as Biden's alleged use of an autopen to sign controversial orders and pardons in his final months at the White House is under scrutiny by a Republican-led congress and White House.

Bondi opened an inquiry into Biden's use of the autopen last month and has promised accountability after Congress released a bombshell report accusing his administration of a coverup and declaring some of the pardons and executive actions legally invalid.
