Trump to remove Billy Long as IRS commissioner
Trump has not announced who will replace Long as the head of the IRS but Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to serve as acting commissioner until a permanent replacement is confirmed.
President Donald Trump is expected to remove Billy Long as the commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, amid a shake-up at the government agency and just two months after he was confirmed to the position, according to multiple news reports Friday afternoon.
The move comes after Long faced backlash for allowing IRS employees to leave work early and over his lack of experience in tax policy. Long spent 12 years in the House of Representatives, 32 years in real estate, and worked as an auctioneer.
Trump has not announced who will replace Long as the head of the IRS, but sources told the New York Times that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will serve as acting commissioner until a permanent replacement is confirmed.
Long was confirmed as IRS commissioner in June. IRS commissioners typically serve five-year terms.
