Trump says Charlie Kirk's assassination is a 'dark moment for America' in Oval Office remarks
Trump said Kirk will now be remembered as a "martyr for truth and freedom," and promised to go after people who commit acts of political violence.
President Donald Trump on Wednesday night delivered a four-minute address from the Oval Office, where he commented that the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk marked a "dark moment for America."
Kirk was killed at a rally in Utah, where he was speaking as part of a Turning Point USA college tour. No suspect has been apprehended over the shooting, but a person of interest was questioned by police before being released.
Trump earlier Wednesday ordered flags nationwide to be lowered to half staff in honor of Kirk until Sunday evening.
“I am filled with grief and anger at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk on a college campus in Utah," Trump said in the video message. "Charlie inspired millions and tonight all who knew him and loved him are united in shock and horror. This is a dark moment for America."
Trump said Kirk will now be remembered as a "martyr for truth and freedom," and promised to go after people who commit acts of political violence.
“My administration will find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity and to other political violence, including the organizations that fund it and support it, as well as those who go after our judges, law enforcement officials and everyone else who brings order to our country,” he said.
He also urged Americans on both sides of the political aisle to confront the idea that murder and violence are the "tragic" consequence of "demonizing" people who don't share their views.
Trump survived an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania last year, where he was shot in the ear.
