Trump says that he paused tariffs because of 'yippy' reaction to the US economy
Trump said he decided to roll back some of the tariffs because people were getting concerned about the economy.
President Donald Trump on Wednesday told reporters that he decided to temporarily roll back some of his reciprocal tariffs because of the "yippy" reaction he got regarding the U.S. economy.
The president announced he was pausing tariffs on dozens of countries, except for China, which will see a 125% tariff. Trump says he made the decision to pause tariffs after more than 75 countries have called to "negotiate a solution."
Trump said that he decided to roll back some of the tariffs because people were getting concerned about the economy.
"Well, I thought that people were jumping a little bit out of line," Trump told reporters about his decision. "They were getting yippy, you know, they were getting a little bit yippy, a little bit afraid ... because we have a big job to do. No other president would have done what I did...and it had to be done. Somebody had to do it...because it was not sustainable."
The comment comes as the stock market sees an unusual surge over the suspension. The Dow Jones closed at a 2,900 point boost, and the S&P 500 had its largest single-day gain since 2008.
