Trump says he will meet with Mamdani at the White House on Friday
Mamdani spokesperson Dora Pekec said the duo would discuss public safety, economic security and “the affordability agenda that over one million New Yorkers voted for just two weeks ago.”
President Donald Trump says he will meet with incoming New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at the White House, where they are expected to discuss such key issues as affordability and public safety.
Mamdani said last week that he planned to reach out to the White House to establish a relationship with the president “because this is a relationship that will be critical to the success of the city."
Trump echoed the sentiment on Sunday, despite Mamdani's victory over former New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The president said Wednesday night in announcing the White House meeting that Mamdani in fact reached out to him but offered no details about the agenda.
Mamdami, a democrat-socialist, was the Democratic Party nominee in the Nov. 4 mayoral race. Campaign promises such as enacting a rent freeze and free bus fares have raised concerns among Republicans including Trump, a native New Yorker who at one point vowed to withhold federal funding for New York City if Mamdani won.
"Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran 'Kwame' Mamdani, has asked for a meeting," Trump posted on Truth Social on Wednesday nigh. "We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st. Further details to follow!"
Mamdani spokesperson Dora Pekec told Politico that the duo would discuss public safety, economic security and “the affordability agenda that over one million New Yorkers voted for just two weeks ago.”
