Trump says Russia-Ukraine war is the last conflict he needs to resolve

President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated his view that a peace agreement is attainable between Russia and Ukraine, which would resolve the last war he has to handle as president.

Trump claimed that the Russia-Ukraine war is the most difficult for him to solve but that he previously viewed it as the easiest. 

The comment came during a meeting at the White House between Trump and several European leaders, including Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. 

"This is a decision that can only be made by President Zelensky and by the people of Ukraine working also together in an agreement with President Putin. And I just think that very good things are going to come of it," he said. "I believe a peace agreement at the end of all of this is something that's very attainable, and it can be done in the near future. With all of the wars that I got involved in, we only have this one left. Of course, as I walk out the door, there'll probably be a new one starting, and I'll get that stopped too."

Zelensky, who met with Trump privately earlier Monday, said that the conversation went well and that it focused on two areas, security guarantees for Ukraine and an exchange of prisoners.

"I think that we had a very good conversation with President Trump, very good," he told other European leaders. "It really was the best one, or, sorry, maybe the best one will be in the future, but it was really good, and we spoke about very sensitive points.

"The first one is security guarantees. And we are very happy with the President that all the leaders are here, and security in Ukraine depends on the United States and on you and on those leaders who are with us in our hearts," he continued. "This is very important that United States gives such strong signal and is ready for security guarantees. The second point, or maybe the first, [humanitarian effort] to exchange all the prisoners. And I think that the president will help."

Russia on Monday afternoon stated that it was against NATO deploying troops inside of Ukraine as part of any security guarantee, after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer proposed the idea during the multilateral meeting.

“We reaffirm our repeatedly stated position of categorical rejection of any scenarios involving the presence of a military contingent from NATO countries in Ukraine,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in its statement. 

Other European leaders at the meeting, including NATO's Secretary-General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed that lasting peace for Ukraine and an end to the conflict were top priorities for them.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb were also at the meeting.

Trump said he called Russian President Vladimir Putin after the meetings and is preparing for a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelensky, which would then expand to a trilateral meeting that he would attend for the United States.

"Everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE for Russia/Ukraine," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "This was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years."

The multilateral meeting comes after Trump met with Putin in Alaska last week.
