Trump urges Fed to cut interest rates amid tariff fallout: 'Perfect time'
Trump's urgings follow his sharing of a video asserting that he had crashed the market intentionally to force the Fed to lower interest rates, thereby allow the government to refinancing its debt at a cheaper cost.
President Donald Trump on Friday urged Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell to cut interest rates amid the stock market fallout from his large-scale reciprocal tariffs.
"This would be a PERFECT time for Fed Chairman Jerome Powell to cut Interest Rates," Trump posted on Truth Social. "He is always 'late,' but he could now change his image, and quickly. Energy prices are down, Interest Rates are down, Inflation is down, even Eggs are down 69%, and Jobs are UP, all within two months - A BIG WIN for America. CUT INTEREST RATES, JEROME, AND STOP PLAYING POLITICS!"
Trump's urgings follow his sharing of a video asserting that he had crashed the market intentionally to force the Fed to lower interest rates, thereby allow the government to refinancing its debt at a cheaper cost. It further asserted that Treasury revenue from tariffs would help to pressure the Fed to do so while also forcing domestic American production and eventually lower prices.
“What about his tariffs? Well, I'll tell you, it's a genius play. It actually forces companies to build here to dodge them. It also forces farmers to sell more of their products here in the US, to bring grocery prices way down. We've already seen this with eggs,” the video narrator said. “Now, remember, 94% of all stocks are owned only by 8% of Americans. So Trump, he's taking from the rich short term and handing it to the middle class through lower prices.”
