Trump urges House to vote on Senate-passed DC funding bill, dodging $1 billion cut from city budget

"The House should take up the D.C. funding 'fix' that the Senate has passed, and get it done IMMEDIATELY," the president wrote in a post on Truth Social. "We need to clean up our once beautiful Capital City, and make it beautiful again."

President Donald Trump on Friday urged the House to approve a spending bill that would keep Washington, D.C., from being hit with a $1 billion budget reduction due to an error in Congress' recent Continuing Resolution (CR).

The Senate passed the bill shortly after approving the CR earlier this month, which keeps the government funded through the end of the current fiscal year. City officials warned the Senate about the issue ahead of the vote, but the upper chamber passed the resolution anyway to avoid a looming government shutdown.

The GOP chairs of both the House and Senate appropriations committees have supported the bill, but the House has still not debated or voted on the issue.

"The House should take up the D.C. funding 'fix' that the Senate has passed, and get it done IMMEDIATELY," the president wrote in a post on Truth Social. "We need to clean up our once beautiful Capital City, and make it beautiful again."

The push comes as Trump urges the city to clean itself up, including by removing homeless encampments in the city and cracking down on crime.

"Washington, D.C., must become CLEAN and SAFE again! We need our Great Police back on the street, with no excuses from the Mayor, or anyone else," Trump wrote. "We will be TOUGH ON CRIME, like never before. I will work with the Mayor on this and, if it does not happen, will have no choice but to do it myself.

"Washington, D.C., will be better, safer, and more beautiful than ever before," he added.

Trump on Thursday established a task force that would help clean up the city, assist with recruiting police officers, revise policies on keeping people detained who are accused of dangerous crimes, and help redirect resources to apprehend and deport illegal immigrants.
