Vice President JD Vance on Tuesday slammed New York Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler's rant against Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers as "despicable," after the lawmaker appeared to endorse shooting masked federal agents.

Nadler claimed during a House Judiciary Committee hearing that the real problem in the United States is the "fascism in our streets, the attacks on American citizens by masked hoodlums," referring to federal agents.

“If you were attacked by a masked person, you might think you were being kidnapped. You’d be justified in shooting the person to protect yourself,” he said. “But we see people being shot, for what? For driving a car?”

The comment was a reference to two protesters who were fatally shot by federal law enforcement in Minneapolis last month, which the Trump administration has claimed was self-defense.

"Jerry Nadler is one of the highest ranking Democrats in the House of Representatives and he is openly calling for people to shoot federal law enforcement," Vance said on X. "This is despicable behavior from an elected official and I'm sure the leftwing media will cover it extensively."

Nadler has defended his comments, insisting that he was only calling for federal agents to "stop shooting citizens."

The comments come amid tension in Congress over funding for the Department of Homeland Security.  Some Democrats have called for Congress to defund the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency while others called for unmasking federal agents.
