Three men accused of transporting dozens of firearms, including weapons reported stolen, and attempting to smuggle them into Canada have been arrested on federal charges, prosecutors announced Friday.

The defendants are Malik Bromfield, Faizan Ali and Kamal Salman. They have been charged with multiple firearms trafficking offenses connected to the movement of 89 guns, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

Authorities said at least 17 of the firearms were previously reported stolen.

Federal prosecutors alleged the suspects participated in a scheme to transport the weapons across the U.S.-Canada border. Additional details about how the alleged operation was uncovered or where the firearms were seized were not immediately released.

The arrests were announced by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton, FBI Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle Jr., and ATF Special Agent in Charge Bryan DiGirolamo.

Bromfield, Ali and Salman appeared Friday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Judith C. McCarthy in federal court in White Plains. All three defendants were ordered detained pending further proceedings.
