Trump administration limits duration of visas for foreign students, visitors and journalists
Under the previous rules, those classifications of visas were available for the duration of the program or employment in the U.S.
The Trump administration announced a final rule on Thursday that places more limitations on the duration of visas for foreign students, cultural exchange visitors and journalists.
The new final rule from the Department of Homeland Security places a fixed time for F-visas for international students, J-visas that allow visitors on cultural exchange programs to work in the U.S., and I-visas for members of the media, Reuters reported.
Under the previous rules, those classifications of visas were available for the duration of the program or employment in the U.S.
The new rules limit student and exchange visas to four years. Journalist visas, which previously were allowed to last for years, would be up to 240 days. In the case of Chinese nationals, the visas would be limited to 90 days.
The rules go into effect in 60 days and are subject to congressional review.
