Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said on Sunday that the gunman at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner appeared to be targeting members of the Trump administration, "likely including the president," but he added that he didn't want to get ahead of the full investigation.

“It does appear that he did in fact set out to target folks who work in the administration, likely including the president,” Blanche said on NBC’s “Meet the Press."

"But I want to wait and not get ahead of us on that," he added.

He emphasized, though, that the investigation into the motive is ongoing.

"We're still investigating a motive, and that's something that will necessarily take a couple of days at least," he said. "We believe he was targeting administration officials in this attack, attempted attack, but that's again, quite preliminary."

Blanche said that it appears the suspect went from California to Chicago on a train and came to Washington.

Blanche also said the suspect checked in as a guest at the hotel.
