Trump formally nominates Jay Hurst for Pentagon comptroller

President Donald Trump formally nominated Jay Hurst for Pentagon Comptroller on Wednesday in a notification to Congress.

Hurst has been serving in the role in an acting capacity since August but would be the first officially in the position under the second Trump administration if confirmed. 

The former Army intelligence officer previously served as the assistant secretary of defense for manpower and reserve affairs and worked as undersecretary of Defense for personnel and readiness, according to The Hill. He has also worked as a legislative director and defense advisor to House Speaker Mike Johnson.

Hurst has supervised multiple financial projects for the War Department, including the Pentagon’s mammoth $1.5 trillion defense budget request. 

He also recently told lawmakers that the conflict in Iran has cost the U.S. an estimated $29 billion, up from $25 billion last month, because of "updated repair and replacement of equipment costs and also just general operational costs keep people in theater."
