Hunter charged with manslaughter after he allegedly shot a woman he mistook for a deer

Walter Moorhead of Salisbury, Maryland, is facing manslaughter charges after police say he fatally shot a woman in Delaware whom he'd mistaken for a deer. 

The 74-year-old hunter was charged with manslaughter and related crimes, according to Delaware State Police. 

Troopers responded to a report of a woman who had been shot in an open field near Ellendale, Delaware, Friday evening. Law enforcement provided live-saving medical care before the victim was taken to an area hospital, where the 39-year-old woman was pronounced dead. 

Troopers contacted Moorhead, who had been hunting in a field, and came to believe he'd fired the shot that struck the woman. He was taken into custody, and the case was referred to the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit. 

Investigators say that the woman, who wasn't identified, was walking through the field with a man and two children. Moorehead was hunting deer from a ground blind, when he spotted what he thought was a deer.

He was released after posting a $43,000 cash bond.
