NC state Senate candidate arrested after threatening suicide and live-posting police standoff
Police ordered Miller to keep his hands away from a pistol he had on his hop, which he refused to do, and then he ran into some nearby woods and called a local television station.
A North Carolina Libertarian candidate for state Senate posted Sunday night posted on X that he intended to take his own life.
Officers monitoring the posts showed up to the apartment of Jonathan D. Miller, in Cary, outside Raleigh. On Monday morning, he began posting live updates of his exchange with police, WRAL reported.
Police ordered Miller to keep his hands away from a pistol he had on his hop, which he refused to do, and then he ran into some nearby woods and called WRAL.
He told the station, as police searched for him, that he had been "pretty depressed and suicidal." Police pursued him for hours, and during that time, he posted updates on X, the New York Post reported.
After hours of being pursued, he was arrested. Cary police chief Terry Sult thanked the station for taking the calls, saying that it helped police get additional insight into what they were dealing with.
