Three states execute male inmates on the same day for first time in 16 years

Three states executed a total of three male death row inmates Thursday, marking the first time in 16 years that there has been a triple execution in the United States.

Alabama executed 42-year-old Jeremy Williams for the 2021 rape and murder of 5-year-old Kamarie Holland, Oklahoma executed Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez for the 2003 murder of his common-law wife, 43-year-old Olimpia Fisher, and Tennessee executed Anthony Darrell Hines for the 1985 murder of Catherine Jean Jenkins.

All three inmates were executed by lethal injection, according to USA Today. Cuesta-Rodriguez and Hines were executed in their states respectively Thursday morning, followed by Williams in the evening.

“There are few words to adequately describe the depth and depravity of Jeremy Williams’ evil act," Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said in a statement after the execution. "Kamarie Holland is an innocent girl who is no longer with us, but she finally received justice tonight. May God bless little Kamarie Holland.”

Five states have now executed 22 death row inmates so far this year and at least another dozen executions are expected. There were 47 inmates executed in the U.S. last year, which was more than any other year since 2009.
