Doloras Huerta, who co-founded the United Farm Workers, died at 96, according to her family.

Huerta founded the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez, and spent decades engaged in activist causes surrounding labor, racial and gender equality issues, NBC News reported.

In 1993, she was the first Latina inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, and in 2012, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Earlier this year, Huerta accused Chavez of raping her, an assault she never spoke of during the many years she worked by his side, the New York Times reported.
