Foreclosures spike nationwide, driven by higher mortgage rates, property taxes, insurance

As home prices in the U.S. reach near-record highs, foreclosure filings nationwide are seeing hefty increases over a six-year period, new data analysis shows. 

Foreclosure filings increased 71% between 2020 and 2025, according to the analysis of Attom data by ABC News. 

The analysis found that Florida had the highest number of annual foreclosure filings per ZIP code, followed by New Jersey, Delaware, Nevada, South Carolina, Illinois, California, Maryland, Ohio and Arizona.

The ZIP code with the highest total number of foreclosures was 77327, located in rural Liberty County northeast of Houston, which had 8,189 in the six-year period. 

The foreclosures are still well below the number seen during the peak of the housing crisis under former President Barack Obama. Experts say higher mortgage rates, increased property taxes, rising cost of insurance and the end of pandemic-era protections are driving the recent increase.
