China's Xi invites 100K Americans for exchange studies

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday extended an invitation for 100,000 Americans to study in the country as part of an exchange program.

"I am glad to announce an invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China through student exchanges in the coming five years," Xi said. He also invoked the memory of American and Chinese soldiers fighting side-by-side in World War II.

Xi made the remarks while visiting President Donald Trump at the White House, a visit that marked the first time the pair had met at that venue.

Notably, Xi's arrival in Washington, D.C., this week made him the first Chinese leader to make two formal state visits to the United States, a pointed President Donald Trump highlighted in his own remarks.
