Thousands of residents in Indiana city still without power nearly 14 days after storm

Thousands of residents of Gary, Indiana, remain without electricity nearly two weeks after a powerful storm on Aug. 11 knocked out power for nearly 400,000 people in the region. 

Gary Mayor Eddie Melton said in a video posted to the city's Facebook page on Sunday that 9,000 people in the city remain without power. 

"Twelve days is too long for families to be without power. Twelve days is too long for parents to worry about their children and for businesses to lose revenue," Melton said. 

In a post on X Sunday, Indiana Gov. Mike Braun expressed frustration with the delays and said he has mobilized the state National Guard, state police and Department of Natural Resources & Department of Correction to literally clear the way for NIPSCO utility crews. 

The Northern Indiana Public Service Company "has ample resources to get the job done in Northwest Indiana, but they continue to fail Hoosiers," Braun said. "NIPSCO is a monopoly with a responsibility to ratepayers. Residents are forced to rely on them for their safety and comfort, and they must get the power back on NOW. There is no excuse for these delays."
