Maine Dem Golden backs Trump's Canada tariffs, while Collins urges talks, amid tough reelection bids

Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, threw his support behind President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canada this week, while GOP Sen. Susan Collins, Maine, urged the administration to return to negotiations.

The ironic inversion of support by political party for the president's policies comes ahead of the midterm elections, in which both candidates are facing tough contests.

“If Canada thinks they’re better off without our goods, I wish them good luck. I suspect in the long run, it won’t go well for them," Golden told the Portland Press-Herald on Tuesday.

Collins pointed to Canada's removal of seafood and fish from its tariff list, saying "[t]hese tariffs would have caused tremendous harm to Maine’s lobstermen, disrupting one of their most important markets during the fall fishing season."

"I urge the U.S. to respond to this show of good faith from our Canadian friends by returning to the negotiating table and working to amicably resolve this trade dispute," she added.

Trump announced tariffs of up to 50% on key Canadian imports after the two countries failed to clinch a trade agreement. Canada has since announced retaliatory tariffs on the U.S.
