First lady Melania Trump on Wednesday paid tribute to the mothers of military service members during a Mother's Day event at the White House.

"This is a time of military conflict for America. And whereby we honor our selfless and valiant Service Members regularly, today is the day we hold their mothers in the highest regard," she said. "It is these military mothers who find themselves alone, awake in their thoughts, in the darkest hours of the night."

"Of course, we must also remember the mothers with a spouse overseas, praying for a safe return so their family can become whole once again," she added.

The first lady made the remarks in a relatively rare public appearance. Also in attendance were Vice President JD Vance, second lady Usha Vance, Education Secretary Linda McMahon, and President Donald Trump.

With Mother's Day set for Sunday, the event comes amid the ongoing Iran war, which has lasted since late February. Despite technically being in a state of ceasefire, the conflict has seen shots exchanged, including this week. Trump, moreover, has threatened to resume open fighting if Iran does not agree to a deal.
