AG Bondi tells prosecutors seek death penalty for Luigi Mangione if convicted of murder
Bondi called Mangione's alleged action a "cold-blooded assassination."
Attorney General Pam Bondi on Tuesday directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione if he is convicted of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione was charged in December 2024 by federal prosecutors with stalking and murdering Thompson in New York City.
The 26-year-old Mangioni also faces state-level charges of first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism in connection with the Dec. 4, 2024, killing on a Manhattan sidewalk.
"Mangione’s murder of Brian Thompson – an innocent man and father of two young children – was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America," Bondi said in a statement, according to ABC News. "After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump’s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again."
