Antisemitic hate crimes surge to new records in 2024: FBI
The report also found anti-Jewish hatred was the second-biggest motivator for hate crimes in 2024, with hatred for black people constituting the highest motivator.
Antisemitic hate crimes rose to new records in the United States in 2024, according to the FBI's latest annual crime report, and anti-Jewish hate was the second-highest motivator in hate crimes last year.
The FBI's "Crime in The Nation" report was released Tuesday and showed violent crime rates overall were down nationwide last year, including crimes like murder and non-negligent manslaughter.
The report also noted that hate crimes were up in 2024, including attacks on the Jewish community which made up 69% of all religion-based hate crimes. The report documented 1,938 anti-Jewish hate crimes last year, the highest number ever recorded by the FBI, compared to 1,832 antisemitic hate crimes in 2023, per the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM).
“As the Jewish community is still reeling from two deadly antisemitic attacks in the past few months, the record-high number of anti-Jewish hate crime incidents tracked by the FBI in 2024 is unfortunately consistent with [Anti-Defamation League] reporting and, most importantly, with the Jewish community’s current lived experience,” Anti-Defamation League head Jonathan Greenblatt told the Jerusalem Post.
The report also found anti-Jewish hatred was the second-largest motivator for hate crimes in 2024, with hatred for black people constituting the highest motivator.
