Driver of car plows through celebrating crowd of football fans in Liverpool, England

Several people were injured when a man plowed his car through a parade of thousands of Liverpool, England, football fans who were celebrating their team’s league championship. 

Horrifying footage of the scene shows the car speeding up several times as it drives through the crowd.

“The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained,” the Merseyside police said, according to CNN. A police spokesperson told CNN “the man arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area.”

“The scenes in Liverpool are appalling – my thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said, thanking police and emergency services “for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.”

No details about injuries have been released.
