Jury finds NJ man guilty of attempted murder in stabbing of Salman Rushdie

A New Jersey man was convicted by a jury on Friday for the attempted murder of author Salman Rushdie.

Hadi Matar was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder and assault in connection with the stabbing of Rushdie while he was onstage at an event in New York. 

The attack took place at the Chautauqua Institution in southwestern New York in 2022.

The jury reached the verdict within two hours on Friday, according to ABC News.

Rushdie, 77, took the stand during the trial and described the attack that resulted in him becoming blind in one eye. 

"It occurred to me that I was dying," he said. "That was my predominant thought."

Matar did not testify.
