Local, federal authorities investigate antisemitic attack involving arson, graffiti in Missouri
"We will not tolerate harassment, intimidation, or violence based on someone’s nationality, race, religion, or ideology," Clayton Mayor Bridget McAndrew said
Local and federal authorities are investigating an antisemitic attack involving arson and graffiti in Clayton, Mo.
Clayton Police responded to a scene at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday, finding three vehicles that had been damaged by a fire that they believe was intentionally set, Fox News reported.
No one was injured, but officers found antisemitic graffiti on a city roadway near St. Louis.
A video of the graffiti reportedly showed that it read, "Death to the IDF," an apparent reference to the Israel Defense Forces. Part of the message was also directed at an individual.
The incident is being investigated as a hate crime, according to police, which added that a preliminary investigation suggested the victim was specifically targeted.
The FBI and St. Louis Regional Bomb and Arson Unit also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
Clayton Mayor Bridget McAndrew said in a Facebook post that "an offensive and violent act of arson" had occurred, targeting a city resident.
"We will not tolerate harassment, intimidation, or violence based on someone’s nationality, race, religion, or ideology," he wrote.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon posted on X that she had "been briefed about the reported car bombings in St. Louis and alleged antisemitic vandalism."
"Our office intends to hold the perpetrators accountable for these violent acts," Dhillon said.
