A Virginia man who was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a 2019 killing fled the country after a psychiatric hospital granted him a 48-hour pass.
Abdulloi Toshpulodzoda was granted a two-day weekend pass and expected to return to the North Virginia Mental Health Institute, where he was committed. Instead, he flew from Dulles International Airport to Instanbul, and then to Dushanbe, Tajikistan, WTOP reported.
In December 2019, Toshpulodzoda was charged with killing Mohammed Hemmatian. After being found not guilty by reason of insanity, he was ordered committed to the state mental facility, where he was held until he fled in July.
The North Virginia Mental Health Institute placed him on "escape status," and it immediately notified Virginia State Police, as well as federal authorities. Customs and Border Protection also issued an alert.
