New York police investigate assault on 59-year-old Jewish man as possible hate crime
“All public leaders in the United States, at both the national and local levels, must immediately and firmly condemn this assault and the calls for violence such as the so-called ‘global intifada,'” Ofir Akunis, consul general of Israel in New York, said.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) is reportedly investigating an incident in Manhattan on Monday as a hate crime, after a Jewish man was reportedly assaulted outside a Jewish restaurant in midtown.
The victim was allegedly walking near the restaurant when another man noted the victim's yarmulke (the traditional Jewish skullcap) and knocked it to the ground, spat on him and punched him in the face, according to the Jewish News Syndicate.
The victim was transported to Mount Sinai Beth Israel in stable condition, the NYPD told the outlet, with “injuries to the right side of his face."
“There is no arrest, and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force," the department said.
Ofir Akunis, consul general of Israel in New York, said the victim is 59-year-old Rami Glickstein, who is an Israeli educator.
“This attack is a direct result of the daily incitement taking place around the world, including in the United States, against Jews and against Israel,” Akunis told the outlet. “Lies, verbal violence, calls for another Oct. 7 massacre, and the unrestricted spread of blood libels, such as the false Gaza narrative, influence many people, some of whom do not hesitate to commit physical attacks.”
“All public leaders in the United States, at both the national and local levels, must immediately and firmly condemn this assault and the calls for violence such as the so-called ‘global intifada,'” he added.
