NYT engineering executive fatally shot in California: Police

The Dublin Police Services said Sunday that New York Times engineering and games player experiences head Jonathan McKinsey was found dead in Alameda County, California, and his in-laws have been taken into custody as suspects.

Police said the 40-year-old executive was found with multiple gunshot wounds Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California, and was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The suspects have been identified as McKinsey's 77-year-old in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, who are both from Dublin. They were both arrested on suspicion of murder and have been booked into Santa Rita Jail. No motive has been released. 

"There are no outstanding suspects and no known threat to public safety," the Dublin Police Services said in a news release. "This investigation is active and ongoing. DPS detectives are continuing to examine evidence to determine the circumstances that led to this homicide."

McKinsey earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology before receiving his master’s in computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. He had worked at the Times since 2023, the New York Times told NBC News.

Dublin, California is located approximately 35 miles south and east of San Francisco.
