A gunfight broke out in North Carolina recently after a man got upset by a pro-Donald Trump banner that was attached to a bus parked on private property.

The gunfight took place last month between Mark Thomas and Benjamin Michael Campbell at Thomas' home in Nantahala Gorge, North Carolina.

Thomas told the Daily Mail in an article published Monday that he fired warning shots near Campbell, after the man allegedly tore down his banner. Campbell left the property after the warning shots, but then came back and fired at Thomas.

"[Campbell] was driving along, saw the sign, slammed on his brakes, you know, had a political trigger moment, and he just had to tear the sign down," Thomas said. "He started reaching up on his tippy toes, trying to get to the edge of the sign. I just thought to myself, this is not happening. I don't believe this."

Thomas said that he was a gun-owning Trump supporter and pulled his weapon out and fired two warning shots into the air. Campbell left the scene but circled back and allegedly fired multiple shots at Thomas through the sunroof of his car.

"He fired five to six rounds as he was heading back down the driveway to the highway that passes in front of my place," Thomas said. "I found one bullet hole in my refrigerator, which is on my porch ... He was most definitely trying to kill me."

Campbell has been charged with a Class C felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, discharging a firearm with intent to incite fear, and willful and wanton injury to personal property.
