As the men’s FIFA World Cup plays out in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, women's teams around the world are tuning up for their World Cup matches next year – including the American team preparing to compete for its fifth title.

The U.S. Women's National Soccer team beat Brazil on Tuesday, the country set to host the Women’s World Cup in 2027. The women have won the title in 1991, 1999, 2015, and 2019.

Brazil beat the U.S. 2-1 on June 6 in the first of a two-game series of friendly matches.

The USWNT then beat Brazil 1-0 on Tuesday when Sophia Wilson forced Brazil into an own goal in front of a 55,000 person crowd. There were eight red cards shown during the match, and Brazil’s manager Arthur Elias was sent off in the 77th minute, according to ESPN.

Head Coach Emma Hayes said she will never forget playing in Brazil, given the game was 'a game of battles.'

"We want to play football, we understand the differences in this country, we accept them, our job is to try to perform, considering there are challenges whatever those challenges are," she said. “We are excited, if we qualify, to come back here.”

The roster for the USWNT will likely evolve as the team gets closer to competing in the World Cup kickoff on June 24th.

The team will play in the ConCacaf W Championship (Nov. 24-Dec. 5). The top four teams will qualify for the World Cup. The United States are three-time defending champions of the tournament.
