Georgia GOP Gov Kemp to send over 300 National Guard troops to DC
Kemp said the 300 soldiers would be deployed in mid-September, but did not indicate when the mission would end. He also noted 16 support staff consisting of military police and medical staff were sent to Washington D.C. earlier this week.
Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp announced Friday that he will send 300 state National Guard soldiers to Washington, D.C., to help restore public safety in the district after President Donald Trump announced a crime emergency in the capital.
Georgia is the eighth state to send Guard troops to the nation's capital since Trump's announcement last month. Louisiana, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia already vowed to send troops.
Kemp said the guard members would be deployed in mid-September but did not indicate when the mission would end. He also said 16 support staff consisting of military police and medical staff were sent to D.C. earlier this week.
"Georgia is proud to stand with the Trump administration in its mission to ensure the security and beauty of our nation's capital," Kemp said in a statement.
The D.C. National Guard troops are expected to remain in the capital through Nov. 30.
