Incoming NJ Dem Gov Sherrill suggests state won't pay federal taxes in protest of Trump admin
Sherrill, who resigned her post in the House of Representatives Thursday, did not provide specifics on what that plan would look like, but it comes after California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom floated the same idea in June.
New Jersey Democrat Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill is considering stopping her state from paying federal taxes when she takes office in January as a way to deal with the Trump administration's policies.
Sherrill in making the statement Thursday, the same day she gave up her House seat, did not provide specifics on how she would withhold taxe, but it comes after California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom floated the same idea in June.
The incoming governor, who defeated Republican Jack Ciattarelli in the general election earlier this month, told comedian Jon Stewart that she thinks about withholding federal tax dollars “all the time” and that it’s a “great idea.”
“If they’re not gonna run the programs, then what are we paying them for?” she said. “It’s like, you know, you’re paying us for a service and they’re not delivering. So let’s stop paying for it.”
Her comment follows President Donald Trump threatening during the recent government to cut funding for New Jersey's Gateway tunnel project, which would build new train tunnels under the Hudson River, according to Politico.
Sherrill also said in another interview Thursday that she is looking for a state attorney general who is willing to take on the Trump administration. She is expected to name key members of her own administration in the coming weeks.
“This is my second Trump administration when I’ve been in office, and I think there’s this false assumption ... that if you just duck your head and if you just go along, that you can kind of get through this,” Sherrill said. “And that’s not the case. The hits are going to be coming. The attacks on our economy are coming. The attacks on our rights and freedoms are here.”
