New York City's socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani recently made it more difficult for federal authorities to monitor members of the Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, who are imprisoned at the notorious Rikers Island.

The move occurred during Mamdani's first day in office when he revoked all of former New York City Mayor Eric Adams' executive orders since his September indictment, which included Executive Order 50.

The executive order gave federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the ability to monitor the convicted Venezuelan gang members, according to the New York Post.

An unnamed federal source told the outlet that the government is now concerned that the gang will take advantage of the change and strengthen its capabilities by passing messages out of the prison through corrupt guards, released inmates and visitors.

“The federal government has long been worried about Tren de Aragua in Rikers Island because they have a more robust communication system to get information to the outside world,” the source said. “Zohran kills exec order No 50 just as we should be more focused on the Venezuelan gang in Rikers — did he know that? ... With dad away, the kids will play. Instead of Zohran making sure there’s a babysitter, he took one away."

The move comes as Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is in a federal jail in New York City on conspiracy, drugs and weapons charges.
