"Half My Sky" author talks about navigating autism, overcoming difficult obstacles as a parent & wife
On this episode of the podcast, host Amanda Head talks with mother, motivational speaker, and internet blogger Carrie Cariello. This best-selling Amazon author, which includes her latest book, "Half My Sky," talks about her journey raising five amazing children, including her son Jack who has autism. Cariello delves into conversation about what she noticed with Jack that was different than with her first born and how when Jack was originally diagnosed at eighteen-months, autism wasn't as widely discussed as it is today. Head asked about the support group or assistance that was made available to her and her family when he was diagnosed, as well as what education looked like for him.
Cariello talks about how puberty and autism don't necessarily mix, but how her son did end up finishing his education despite the additional difficulties. What is important to recognize, which is discussed within Cariello's latest book, "Half My Sky," is how there are a lot of educational institutions that do not fit the profile and daily needs of a neurodiverse individual. However, after a thorough and lengthy search, Cariello found Jack a program that continues to help him develop personal and professional skills, like getting a dish-washing job at a local restaurant.
Listen to how Cariello defied what publishers originally asked her to write about and why she went on to self-publish this book which has sold thousands upon thousands of copies already. Furthermore, the title of her latest book is also very interesting and comes with a loving background -- keep an ear out as you listen to hear how she came up with the title. Hint: her husband Joe serves as a big part of her inspiration.
