Trump has Monday deadline to ask Supreme Court to delay election interference trial

Former President Donald Trump must ask the Supreme Court to extend a delay by Monday or risk going to trial on charges related to alleged 2020 election interference.

His attorneys indicated they would file an emergency appeal four days after the Supreme Court heard his separate appeal to remain on the 2024 presidential ballot amid state attempts to toss him from the ballot over his alleged involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. 

The filing would maintain a delay on the trial of Trump as the Supreme Court determines what to do next, according to The Associated Press. 

The D.C. appeals court scheduled the filing deadline last week when it rejected Trump's arguments that he is immune from prosecution and ruled that the trial could proceed. The Supreme Court's decision on the case could determine whether Trump, the Republican presidential primary front-runner, could go to trial before the 2024 general election this November. 

Special counsel Jack Smith has been pushing for the trial to occur this year as Trump has attempted to delay the case.
