President Trump said he is renaming Veterans Day, November 11, as "Victory Day for World War I" and May 8 as "Victory Day for World War II."

"Many of our allies and friends are celebrating May 8th as Victory Day, but we did more than any other Country, by far, in producing a victorious result on World War II," Trump posted on Truth Social on Thursday.

"I am hereby renaming May 8th as Victory Day for World War II and November 11th as Victory Day for World War I. We won both Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything — That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore, that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!"

May 8, which is not a federal holiday, is remembered as Victory in Europe Day, when Nazi Germany surrendered World War II. However, the war against Japan continued until the country's surrender in September 1945, and Sept. 2 is remembered as Victory over Japan Day.

Veterans Day was originally established as Armistice Day to honor World War I veterans. In 1968, Armistice Day, renamed Veterans Day, became a federal holiday to honor U.S. veterans of all wars.
