Trump reports significant progress in US-China trade talks
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met in Switzerland with officials from Beijing as China's economy began to show impact from Trump's tariffs
President Donald Trump signaled Saturday night a possible breakthrough in U.S.-China trade talks, declaring there was "great progress made" and more negotiations are set for Sunday.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met in Switzerland with officials from Beijing as China's economy began to show the impact from Trump's sweeping tariffs.
“A very good meeting today with China, in Switzerland," Trump wrote on his TruthSocial platform. "Many things discussed, much agreed to. A total reset negotiated in a friendly, but constructive, manner.
"We want to see, for the good of both China and the U.S., an opening up of China to American business. GREAT PROGRESS MADE!!!” He added.
Trump imposed a 145% tariff on most Chinese imports, and China responded with a 125% tariff on most American imports.
Trump suggested he might lower the top Chinese tariff to 80% earlier this week.
