Trump: 'Very unhappy' about Israel striking Hamas in Qatar
"I'm not thrilled about the whole situation," President Trump said
President Trump said that he was "very unhappy" with Israel for striking Hamas in Qatar.
Israel said following the strikes on Tuesday that it was targeting Hamas leadership, whose headquarters are in Qatar, a U.S. ally.
"I'm not thrilled about the whole situation," Trump said Tuesday evening, ABC News reported. "I was very unhappy about it, very unhappy about every aspect, and we got to get the hostages back, but I was very unhappy about the way that went down."
Trump also posted on Truth Social on Tuesday about the strike.
"This morning, the Trump Administration was notified by the United States Military that Israel was attacking Hamas which, very unfortunately, was located in a section of Doha, the Capital of Qatar. This was a decision made by Prime Minister Netanyahu, it was not a decision made by me," Trump wrote.
"Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a Sovereign Nation and close Ally of the United States, that is working very hard and bravely taking risks with us to broker Peace, does not advance Israel or America’s goals. However, eliminating Hamas, who have profited off the misery of those living in Gaza, is a worthy goal. I immediately directed Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to inform the Qataris of the impending attack, which he did, however, unfortunately, too late to stop the attack," he continued.
A spokesperson for Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the warning from the U.S. came as the strikes occurred.
"The statements being circulated about Qatar being informed of the attack in advance are baseless. The communication received from one of the American officials came during the sound of explosions resulting from the Israeli attack in Doha," the spokesperson said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said the airstrikes were "completely justified" following the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas on Israel.
Hamas said five of its members were killed in the strike in Doha, Qatar, but that none were senior officials.
